Life is a Jungle!

It is messy, dense, complicated and yet beautiful and awe inspiring. Yes there are thorns, hurdles, creepy crawlies and the occasional blobs of bird poop in your hair (that’s if it misses your eyes). Lions and tigers (both imaginary and real) are lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce and feast… but there are beautiful sunsets, intriguing creatures, gulps of fresh air and thousands of breath-taking moments.

I am a young woman in my early 20s walking in this jungle and hoping to make the very best of the experience. Some days are better than others, but each is memorable and enriching.

A little about me…

I was born under a baobab tree in a small village deep in the country of Africa. I enjoyed playing with my pet elephant and monkey from a very tender age, though I despised feeding my dad’s lions. The best day in my life was at age sixteen when I first saw a light bulb and the worst has to be at age five when the village elders pushed a guinea fowl-bone through my nose, as is the custom of our tribe.

Ok, ok… by now you probably know I’m kidding, but it is amazing how many stereotypes the “outside world” has about Africa. I thought I would address a few of them before we move on. They might prove to be barriers for some of my readers.

No. Africa is not a country. It is actually a continent made up of 54 countries (which is probably why I don’t know how to speak “African”. Infact, I doubt such a thing exists) and yes, Egypt is actually in Africa.

Yes. We have HIV, tribal wars, starvation and poverty, just like every place has its own problems but no! Not every African is hungry, sick, starving or miserable, though many are.

Yes. We are in touch with our culture and traditions. There are things we do here that are done nowhere else but no! We are not savages and we are far from being “backward” or distant from the rest of the civilised world. We actually have the internet, satellite TV and that sort of stuff.

Yes. We have jungles in Africa. There are lions and hyenas and all sorts of creatures in those jungles but no! The whole of Africa is not a jungle. No! You will not bump into a buffalo inside the airport and no! I don’t have a pet lion. Infact, nowadays people generally have to go to game parks to see those.

Anyways… enough about Africa, back to me.

You have probably gathered that I like humour and spicing things up. I am quite opinionated and rather liberal.  I don’t like stereotypes and labels, because I believe they limit how much we benefit from others. I love writing! It is a sweet escape from the hustle and bustle of city life and the pressure of trying to balance pursuing an a degree and having a social life, girl problems and plain old L.I.F.E.

There is one thing I love more than writing and that is spending time with my king, friend and saviour Jesus Christ. I was blessed to meet him at a very early age. The best decision I have ever made was to give Him total control over my life. I have never regretted it.

Zvishuwo is a Shona (my native language) name that translates to “wishes, hopes, aspirations or dreams”. I love the fact that it identifies with the period that I’m in right now. There are lots of loose, hanging ends. I am at that stage of life where I have so many hopes, dreams and aspirations. Few things are certain or predictable. I constantly find myself day-dreaming about my future. Together with those dreams come questions. Myriads of questions, most of which can only be left to the test of time. I don’t have answers, but I do have faith in the God who knew me before He placed me in my mother’s womb and predestined me for a special purpose, which he shall empower me to fulfil.

As I share my thoughts and experiences, I hope you will be encouraged, inspired and motivated. My biggest prayer is that this blog will bring you closer to God and the destiny He has for you. I also want to grow as I interact with you and draw from your experiences and wisdom.
